Sammy Story 13: Return Visit

August 12, 2020 | Sammy Stories | No Comments

There was another weekend we had to both be away, and we weren’t sure what to do. M had offered some help when we got Sammy, but we did not want to impose, or make it a habit. It was too soon for us to leave him with unknown people, so M graciously agreed to take him for the weekend. She asked us to please not put him in a kennel, and we certainly felt the same, knowing Sammy would be insane with fear.
We arrived at Sammy’s former house. M was not there, but their eight year old son was there. He came up to the truck and greeted Sammy in the front seat. Sammy was not interested in going to him at all. I could tell that what M had told us was true. She had said their son was “too much boy” for Sammy. He was just a normal kid, but probably moved too fast and made too much noise for Sammy to be unafraid.
Sammy would not hop out of the car. I had to lift the reluctant little guy out. I held him in my arms, waiting in the driveway while Theo and T, the father talked and we all waited for M.
When she arrived, Sammy went into her arms without hesitation. He still remembered his other “mom” and I knew he would be fine.
When we came to pick him up a few days later, M was pleased to report that the family noticed how much Sammy had already changed for the better. The two biggest changes were that he didn’t only stay in his kennel, and he joined the family at the table and watching TV.
It was heartening to know there had been progress, and no matter how far he had yet to go, Sammy was on his journey and we were going to be there, helping him along.
We were so thankful for the help from that loving family. It was sad that he could not be the best pet for them, nor they the best fit for him, for it was very evident they really loved him and had tried so hard to give him a good home.
