The Dance

I was thinking about my life so far.

Living with God, and following Him, is like learning to dance. The music starts, and He extends His hand for you to take. You place your small one trustingly in His, not knowing how this will turn out. You’ve seen others dance, and you wonder, having never done it yourself, if you will ever be able to master the steps. Will you ever, in a million years, glide along as confidently and gracefully as you see those others do. You know your steps are faltering, unsure—not at all graceful or easy. You are afraid you will stumble and look foolish, and He will be ashamed of you.

But He puts His other hand on your waist, and He tells you to look at Him, and never mind the others. You begin to feel secure. He shows you your first few steps. Perhaps, if you are very small, like a child, He lets you place your feet on top of his for a while and He carries you along as you cling to Him.

The first few steps are clumsy. But you follow His lead. Sometimes He moves fast, and you try your best to keep up. Sometimes He goes slow, and you catch your breath. Sometimes He pauses altogether and you wonder if you did something wrong.

But gradually, you begin to feel how the music flows through Him, and then to you. You learn to synchronize your steps and your rhythm to His.
And you glide, step, glide, step, pause, twirl, lift, twirl.

And it is a beautiful dance.
